There are a lot of options available when it comes to a firearm for home defense.
My preference has alway been a shotgun, but today I will remove my prejudice and cover all the options with a fair approach.
Before we get into all the options and reasons, if you are the type of person who just wants to cut to the chase, then here are the top 5 guns for home defense:
There you have the list, now let’s get onto the why.
I started this by saying that my preferred Home Defense gun is always a shotgun.
Shotguns are a solid choice because in a home defense situation you are most likely going to be a dark space since most home invasions happen at night.
You might be a little bleary eyed and just awoken from a deep sleep so your aim might be off, and the shotgun allows you to hit a target without being completely accurate.
Shotguns use shells of pellets which means you not only get a wider spray to hit your target with, the pellets also don’t penetrate walls like a bullet and THIS is the #1 reason for shotguns being my choice.
In the movies, they shoot pistols and rifles at each other and stand behind flimsy walls to avoid bullets. In real life bullets will penetrate just about any wall on your home. If you shoot at an invader and miss, are you sure your child is not somewhere on the other side of the wall behind your target?
The next option is a rifle. There are all kinds of makes and models, but the AR-15 is the one that we chose for Home Defense
The AR-15 just gets it right in about every department and checks the boxes with all the options and modifications that are available for them.
A Big Reason I like the AR-15 is because it’s most popular cartridge, the .223 NATO actually fires with accuracy you’d expect from a rifle, but penetrates LESS than a bullet from a pistol AND shotgun shells.
With the AR-15 you get the best of 2 worlds.
Accuracy and Distance of the Rifle, and the safety of less penetration of the bullet
Some of the most classic styles of guns are revolvers and pistols.
The most common caliber for a pistol for home defense is the 9mm.
So with that power and caliber, that means that you will be able to shoot through walls, so you need to be very aware of your surroundings and where your loved ones are in the house.
Some experts recommend using hollow point bullets because they are a bit safer in the home, but still not something to completely rely on when knowing where your family is.
The Glock 19 is a very popular pistol and that is because it is so versatile and applicable for just about any situation you might encounter. It is good for concealed carry.
It is easy to disassemble for cleaning and repair and there are always plenty of parts available.
The Smith & Wesson is by far the best revolver for home defense just because of it’s sheer stopping power. This gun will blast through multiple walls, and stop any thug dead on arrival. NOW, while this goes against my opening comment, the person who chooses this gun will definitely know the power and responsibility that comes with this kind of fire power.
The .357 Magnum is a utility weapon which means it always works. The mechanisms are solid and reliable and jamming is never an issue.
So there you have it
